Job Description

Our client is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Finance Controller with a background in the construction industry and/or strong experience in project accounting to lead their finance and accounting operations transformation. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who possesses a "can-do" attitude, thrives on process improvement, and can drive a major financial system migration. This role is critical in providing strategic financial guidance and ensuring the integrity of their project-based financial reporting.

Responsibilities:

  1. Financial Leadership & Management
  • Oversee and mentor a team of 4-5 accounting professionals, including Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) staff.
  • Manage all aspects of the company's accounting function, including General Ledger (GL), financial statements, budget preparation, and the monthly/quarterly/annual close process.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards (e.g., IFRS/GAAP) and federal/provincial regulations.
  1. Project & Construction Accounting
  • Manage the financial lifecycle of construction projects, including job costing, percentage-of-completion (POC) revenue recognition, work in progress (WIP) schedules, and adherence to contract terms.
  • Oversee cash flow forecasting and management related to project timing, billing milestones, and subcontractor payments.
  • Identify and implement key performance indicators (KPIs) and leading indicators (e.g., procurement lead times, budget variances, change order frequency) to establish proactive financial processes and early risk mitigation related to project financials.
  1. Process Improvement & System Migration
  • Serve as the lead Finance Subject Matter Expert (SME) for an upcoming company-wide financial system migration (moving away from QuickBooks).
  • Analyze and streamline existing AP and AR processes to maximize efficiencies and internal controls before and during the system transition.
  • Design and implement best-practice workflows and configurations within the new ERP/financial management system to support job costing and project reporting requirements.
  1. Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)
  • Prepare and present accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to senior leadership.
  • Manage corporate budgeting and forecasting activities.
  • Provide strategic analysis on project profitability, cost overruns, and overall business performance to support executive decision-making.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting, with at least 5 years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Strong experience in Construction Accounting, Job Costing, or Project-Based Accounting.
  • Proven experience leading a major accounting or ERP system implementation/migration (experience moving from systems like QuickBooks is a plus). Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, motivate, and develop an accounting team of 4-5 individuals.
  • A proactive, solutions-oriented, and driven mindset, with a commitment to continuous improvement.
