Job Description

JOB-37590

Job Title: CPA Tax Preparer
Location: Erie, PA (and surrounding area)
Work Type: Primarily In-Person / On-Site (Hybrid Flexibility After Onboarding)
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Compensation: $64,000 – $112,000 USD (depending on experience)

About the Opportunity:

Our client, a growing and quality-focused tax advisory firm, is seeking a CPA Tax Preparer who takes pride in doing tax work thoroughly, accurately, and thoughtfully.

This is a primarily in-person role, with some hybrid flexibility after onboarding, for a CPA who enjoys preparing and reviewing complex individual and entity tax returns, researching issues until the best answer is found, and taking full ownership of their work - from data entry through final signature.

The firm operates as a proactive, strategy-led tax practice, working with clients year-round to manage their tax position. While tax preparation is a core responsibility, this is not a volume-driven or last-minute tax shop. Quality, defensibility, and doing what’s best for the client come first. This role is also designed as a development pathway into a future Tax Strategist position, or alternatively, into a supervisory or review-focused role as the firm continues to grow.

This opportunity is best suited for candidates located in or near the Erie, PA area who value in-person collaboration.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and review complex individual and entity tax returns
  • Personally enter data and trace figures back to source documents
  • Research tax issues, elections, and positions to determine the most accurate and defensible outcome
  • Perform thorough, intentional reviews (not surface-level checks)
  • Sign the tax returns you prepare, taking responsibility for the final work product
  • Supervise and mentor Enrolled Agents and Tax Assistants
  • Lead completion of a growing inventory of approximately:
    • ~100 individual returns
    • ~200 entity returns
  • Communicate directly with clients regarding their tax returns
  • Collaborate closely with internal team members involved in tax planning and strategy

Qualifications:

Must-Have Requirements:

  • Active CPA license in good standing
  • Experience preparing and reviewing complex entity tax returns (Partnerships, S-Corps, C-Corps)
  • Strong understanding of how entity taxation impacts individual returns
  • Hands-on experience with tax preparation, review, and detailed work
  • Strong research skills and persistence in finding the right answer
  • High standards for accuracy, documentation, and defensible tax positions
  • Comfortable taking ownership and standing behind signed work
  • Optimistic, solutions-oriented mindset

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior tax staff
  • Background in a boutique, quality-focused, or advisory-oriented firm
  • Experience with Intuit ProConnect, QuickBooks, TaxDome, Xero, or willingness to learn

Why Join?

  • Do work you’re proud to sign
  • Focus on quality, not volume
  • Collaborate with a team that values thoughtful preparation and real planning
  • Opportunity to grow into deeper responsibility over time
  • Be part of a firm intentionally raising the standard in small business tax work

If you’re a CPA who believes tax work is a craft—not a race—and wants to grow in a firm that values accuracy, ownership, and client impact, we’d love to hear from you.
