Divisional Controller
The Divisional Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, and internal control activities for a division operating within agricultural commodities and renewable energy markets. This role partners closely with operations, commercial teams, and executive leadership to provide accurate financial information, ensure compliance, and drive financial discipline in a complex, asset-intensive environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all divisional accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end close, and financial statement preparation
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting in accordance with GAAP
- Prepare and present divisional financial results, variance analysis, and key performance metrics to senior leadership
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning for commodity-based and renewable energy operations
Commodity & Industry-Specific Accounting
- Oversee accounting for agricultural commodities, including inventory valuation, hedging activities, derivative accounting, and market price fluctuations
- Manage accounting for renewable energy assets, including power generation, project accounting, capitalization, depreciation, and asset impairments
- Ensure accurate tracking of production costs, margins, and profitability across commodities, energy projects, and contracts
- Partner with commercial teams on pricing, contract structures, and margin analysis
Operational & Cost Accounting
- Oversee cost accounting, standard costing, and variance analysis for production, processing, and construction activities
- Monitor inventory controls, physical counts, reserves, and reconciliation processes
- Support operational efficiency initiatives through financial analysis and process improvements
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop divisional accounting staff, including managers and senior accountants
- Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Controls, Compliance & Audit
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with company policies, GAAP, and regulatory requirements
- Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external auditors
- Support SOX compliance, risk management, and process documentation initiatives
Systems & Process Improvement
- Oversee ERP systems and financial reporting tools; lead or support system implementations and enhancements
- Drive standardization and process improvements across divisional accounting functions
- Collaborate with IT and operations on data integrity and reporting automation
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred)
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles
- Strong experience in agricultural commodities, renewable energy, or related asset-intensive industries
- Solid understanding of commodity markets, inventory accounting, cost accounting, and financial controls
- Experience with project accounting and capital-intensive operations (preferred)
- ERP experience (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Dynamics, or similar systems)
- Proven ability to partner with operations and executive leadership
