Job Description

Our client in Ottawa, within the non-profit sector, is seeking an Accountant to join their team onsite, five days a week, for an initial 2-month contract with the possibility for extension. This position ensures compliance with accounting principles and internal financial policies and procedures while upholding the unique reporting standards and accountability requirements of the not-for-profit sector. Key responsibilities include budget preparation, financial reporting, system maintenance, reconciliations, and providing guidance and support to financial staff.

 

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the daily operations of the Financial Services Department
  • Provide support, training, and mentorship to financial services staff
  • Monitor cash flow and maintain oversight of the organization’s bank accounts
  • Process electronic fund transfers (EFTs) via online banking
  • Prepare and review monthly bank reconciliations
  • Maintain and post recurring, month-end, and year-end journal entries
  • Prepare and file HST rebate claims semi-annually
  • Maintain the Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains Accounting system
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring annual budgets
  • Support audit preparation and related year-end reporting tasks
  • Contribute to financial planning and provide calculations for collective bargaining as needed
  • Provide operational support to the Director, Financial Services, and Information Technology

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in accounting, finance, or payroll
  • Hands-on experience in:
    • Budget preparation and monitoring
    • Bank account and cash flow management
    • Processing EFT payments and conducting reconciliations
    • Journal entries and year-end financial processes
    • Preparing HST rebate filings
    • Supporting annual audits and assisting with financial planning activities

 

Qualifications:

  • Degree or certificate in Accounting, Finance, or Commerce, or equivalent education and experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of:
    • Basic accounting systems and principles
    • Budget preparation and financial reporting
    • Microsoft Dynamics (Great Plains) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with Human Resource Information Systems
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
