Job Description

Altis Recruitment is assisting a nonprofit client of ours in their search for a Director of Finance to join their team. This is a newly created role that offers an exciting opportunity to lead financial management and contribute to the overall success of our organization.

Position Summary: The Director of Finance will be responsible for directing and executing various financial management functions within the organization. This includes participating in forecasting and operational planning, coordinating accounting activities, and ensuring compliance with government directives and policies. As a key member of the management team, the Director of Finance will contribute to the strategic decision-making process and provide leadership in financial processes and business operations.

Roles and Responsibilities

Financial Analysis and Reporting:

  • Prepare and supervise the development of annual budgets for corporate and government submissions.
  • Conduct monthly analysis of income statements and budget reports, recommending corrective actions as needed.
  • Oversee year-end financial analysis and support schedules for auditors.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and financial forecasts to ensure a balanced financial result.
  • Implement and maintain administrative policies and procedures for internal control and compliance.

Records and Documentation:

  • Maintain financial records and prepare documentation related to financial services.
  • Monitor cash position and reconcile bank statements.
  • Plan and implement accounting procedures and controls.
  • Approve standard journal entries and supervise system inputs.

Human Resources:

  • Participate in the selection, evaluation, and promotion of finance staff.
  • Recommend changes to job descriptions and staff deployment.
  • Interpret financial policies and procedures, ensuring implementation by staff.
  • Foster a cooperative and engaged team culture within the finance department.

Relations within the Organization:

  • Act as a resource for the Audit and Finance Committee.
  • Advise managers on accounting procedures and budget monitoring.
  • Develop processes to enhance financial services within the organization.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in Board of Directors Committees as requested.
  • Contribute to the review and development of procurement policies.
  • Lead project teams as needed.
  • Identify and implement appropriate software and hardware resources for finance operations.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the finance area, proposing improvements as necessary.
  • Perform other related tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Senior Director, Finance.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Chartered Professional Accountant designation required.
  • 5+ years of experience in a senior financial role.
  • Experience in a public sector setting, particularly with organizations receiving government funding.
  • Previous financial reporting experience in a nonprofit organization preferred.
  • Knowledge of corporate services, procurement, risk management, and decision support.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong managerial and leadership abilities.
  • Ability to establish positive partnerships and facilitate organizational change.

 

Education

  • Post secondary education in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or other related studies.
